Consider where your startup budget goes—and what you'll continue paying as your sales grow. A franchise and an independent business offer different kinds of support and control.

Choose on value as well as fees. Franchise packages differ and may provide benefits you would need to arrange independently. Compare actual proposals and contracts. Neither route guarantees income or profit, and both require working capital and other business expenditure.

AN ILLUSTRATION FROM IAN'S EXPERIENCE

What could
11% of sales cost?

Ian reports paying a 9% franchise fee plus a 2% marketing fee, with VAT added, during his time as a franchisee. Using that combined 11% as an example, £250,000 of annual turnover subject to those fees would generate £27,500 in fees, plus VAT.

Illustration: £250,000 × (9% + 2%) = £27,500, before VAT on the fees. Based on Ian's reported historical experience, not a current quote or industry-wide rate. It is not an earnings forecast or a like-for-like profit saving: packages, revenue definitions, support, marketing expenditure and other costs differ.
